Smelt is a family of small fish, and the rainbow smelt is no different in terms of size. But just because they’re small doesn’t mean that we won’t try and catch em’, especially in the lakefront areas of Chicago. They’re also a popular winter game fish. Unfortunately, their commercial harvests have seen an historic drop in production, and because they are such weak swimmers, the rainbow smelt can’t overcome most fish ladders.
