Have you heard that the dog days of summer are here? They're not called those because they have to do with dogs, but we can pretend, right?



It's almost the fall, which means time for new beginnings, back to school, and hunting, of course! Head out with your gear and don't forget to bring your pup with you. You don't have one? No worries - here are our picks for the best dogs to own if you're a frequent hunter.

1. Labrador Retriever
The name retriever should say it all. Labs are smart and can be trained and taught easily. Their outstanding sense of smell and sight allows them to see birds in the sky or find some who are already deceased. 

2. Golden Retriever
Historically, golden retrievers have a history of retrieving duck and game birds and bringing to the hunter. Additionally, the retrievers have an outstanding sense of smell and are often used in search parties, so their senses can be applied to hunting as well.

3. Beagle
Snoopy may have been a beagle, but if he was real, he probably could have hunted, too. Originally trained for older hunters as well as younger hunters, their small stature and senses allowed them to trot behind their owners on horseback. 

4. Pointer
Referred to as a "bird dog" in the south, the pointer is known for its muscular stature, striking good looks, and brilliant hunting skills.

5. American Foxhound
Their independence as a breed allows these dogs to follow a sent - that means you get your game faster, and they're an efficient hunting buddy. Choose this dog as your companion and you'll be ready to go. 

6. Bluetick Coonhound
As a member of the hound family, it goes without saying these dogs are perfect for hunting. Train these pups properly and let them hunt individually to make your job easier.
